About Michael Schaal, M.S.W.

Michael Schaal is a licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in private practice since 1977. In 1990, Michael co-founded The Art of Living, a Center for Psychotherapy and Personal Development in Burlington, Vermont. Michael currently practices psychotherapy at the Art of Living.

Michael has a separate organizational consulting practice through which he offers services to Business, Educational and Non-Profit organizations.

Michael has taught as an adjunct instructor at the Graduate level at St. Michael’s College, and presented professionally at a number of conferences. Throughout his career, Michael has continued his education and training, honing his skills, bringing the latest techniques to his practice and his clients.

Michael currently serves on various Boards of Directors of non-profit organizations as he has throughout his life, and is active as a volunteer for several non-profits. He is often called to provide leadership and has founded many committees and groups that continue their work today.

Michael is the son of Holocaust survivors. The Holocaust and its aftermath have profoundly shaped Michael’s view of the world. He is committed to the necessity of respecting individual and human rights and the need for people everywhere to hold their differences in peaceful and respectful ways. Michael deeply believes in the resilience of people and the capacity of individuals to grow and shape their lives and their relationships.

Michael Schaal’s work is optimistic, informed by hope and possibility. Michael holds a BA from Boston University and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University.
